Introduction

The article assesses the efficiency of individually oriented cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for adolescents with chronic aggressive behavior.

Hypothesis

Hoogsteder et al., hypothesized CBT has a positive impact on the adolescents with aggressive behavior (24). The hypothesis reflects the idea that interventions with individual treatment components tend to be more efficient than only group treatment.

Theories Used in the Article

The authors used risk-need-responsively principle theory. The theory suggests interventions be tailored to characteristics of the individual. The theory further states that interventions tend to be effective with high-risk individuals.  The study also applied the theory of negative parent-child interaction. It is also stated that parents can contribute to children aggressive behavior. Hoogsteder et al. argue that when using CBT, a therapist should monitor the intensity of aggression associated with the negative parent-child interaction (24).

Population

The study used a total of 164 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (Hoogsteder et al. 29). The group included 41% African Americans, 5% Latino, and 24% Americans. The researchers targeted this group based on the fact that they are on adolescent stage and they are likely to change their behavior. Hoogsteder et al. argue that some of the aggressive reactions are developed by the youths from a very tender age due to the negativity of some parents (24). The youths are associated with aggressive behavior due to drastic growth changes in adolescence.

Findings

The study found that 74.2% of adolescents had aggressive behavior characterized by defensiveness. The results demonstrate that stress inoculation therapy was useful in anger management at an early stage of aggression. Moreover, phone calls method worked best when it is used to remind the youths of constant behaviors and the achievements they were supposed to reach within a given period. Approximately 62.5% of the aggressive behavior cases were male. Approximately 41% of the affected adolescents were the African Americans, about 74.2% of the victims had already developed some mental disorders, and “47% had post-traumatic stress” (Hoogsteder et al. 29).

Conclusion

The article concludes that CBT has a positive impact on the adolescents and youths who suffer from aggression problems. This is based on the fact that the therapy includes other interventions depending on the intensity of the problem thus making it efficient. Most adolescents suffer from acute aggressiveness though they have different signs and ways of reacting to the treatment.

Research Limitation

The main limitations of the study include lack of cooperation from the respondents. For example, there are cases of youths who were rebellious towards medication. The analysis methods have some vivid shortcomings like the fact that none of them was able to test the biases of grouping youths according to the level of aggressiveness. As a result, the inferences might be underestimation or overestimation. Another shortcoming is that the research was done using a limited number of youths. The research ought to include more than 300 adolescents from different areas to come up with a comprehensive analysis.

Opinion About the Article

In my opinion, the article is credible to be used in making policies guiding therapists on how to deal with aggressive behavior among the youths. In fact, youths should be given special attention so that they can get different treatment depending on the intensity of the problem.

Recommendation for Future Research

The updated version of the study of RNR-principles is mainly focusing on the use of judicial interventions to help the youths to fight their problems using the modernized way. The future research should take into account the role of socio-cultural environment in shaping a person’s behavior.
