Have you seen Mad Men show? Wasn’t it shocking that all people were smoking and drinking, and it was a common thing? Nowadays healthy habits have become an essential part of our everyday lives. More and more people start actively take care about their bodies and minds. Bad habits such as smoking and drinking are strongly criticized now.

What is a habit?

According to Britannica, habit is a typical process that you rather learn than innate. It is something that you do on a daily basis. This action doesn’t require thinking from your side. It’s almost automated. Think of walking as an acquired habit. You were not born with a skill to walk. Instead, you learned how to walk at least after 1 year of your life. And it took you some time to make your first step, isn’t it? Of course, you don’t remember these things, but ask your parents.

Why 3 weeks?

So, why people think 21 days will be enough to develop a needed habit? James Clear has explicitly told that in 1960s there was a surgeon named Maxwell Maltz. He published a book which became too popular. Unfortunately, it had a misleading thought that habits develop in 21 days. People bought the book and believed the famous surgeon. Though, recent studies show that in order to develop a habit and make the process automated, you need at least 66 days or 2 months. Sounds tough, huh? Anyway, this seems like an answer to the question why so many people can’t form a habit in 3 weeks.
Anyway, there are some habits which take less time to acquire. Here is the list of 4 of them.

Reduce sleep

Have you ever heard about genius people sleeping no more than 4 hours per night? Napoleon couldn’t fall asleep because of his gigantic invasion schemes. Thomas Edison is believed to sleep 3-4 hours. He stated the sleep was a huge waste of time. Consider yourself a genius. How much time do you REALLY need to refresh your vital juices? Is it 4 hours? Is it 12 hours? Reducing sleep to 6 hours each night might seem like a solution to you. Imagine how many things will become accessible due to extra time.

Keep learning

Learning is a hard process for everyone. It’s really difficult to force yourself to study if you don’t have any motivation. Assign yourself a task, for example, learn a course at Coursera. It will help you stick to the schedule and don’t miss the lessons. Think of a pleasant gift for yourself when you finish the course. It will also help you remain continuous.

Meditation

Meditation is a great way to relax your body and mind. Listening to calm music and watching your posture will discipline you. Additionally, you will learn how to become peaceful in seconds. It is an important skill nowadays, as many people that live in big cities struggle from depressions.

Read a book every day

I don’t think it is necessary to say a lot about reading. Everyone should understand that reading books enhances our mind skills. People learn through books. Bill Gates recommends to read at least one book a week. How come this busy billionaire finds some time to read books? He developed a habit to read a book each 7 days. And look how much successful he is now! Start from a small goal for the first time. Let’s say 2 books in a month. And slowly, increase your reading speed. You won’t notice how fast your reading will improve.
